Where does the bartender duck go in Sort Them Ducks?
Mafia. Not Jobs, not Cowboys.
Sort Them Ducks sorting guide: hats first, then outfit and props. Bartender is Mafia, Black Cat is Halloween — not the obvious shelf. Verified August 2026.
Watch a first-look pass that has to guess categories from hats, outfits, and props.

This Sort Them Ducks sorting guide answers “where does this duck go?” Sort Them Ducks uses semantic shelves that do not always match real-world jobs. Read headwear first, then outfit, then props, then creature body. Verified August 17, 2026 · Steam.
| Priority | Cue | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Headwear | Toque → Jobs chef; pirate hat → Pirates |
| 2 | Outfit / armor | Tux + bar kit → Mafia bartender |
| 3 | Props | Surfboard → Beach; violin → Music |
| 4 | Creature design | Shark body → Animals; cat + holiday cues → Halloween |
Matched by build plan, shared topics, and guide progression — not random related links.
Community identification is a stack, not a vibe. Skip the stack and you will argue with red shelves for an hour.

A yellow duck in a chef hat is Jobs. A yellow duck with a burger hat is Food. The rubber color is almost never the category.
A lifeguard float is Beach, even though “lifeguard” is a job word. A bartender tray is Mafia in this taxonomy. Trust the prop, then confirm on the furniture.
Creature silhouettes (shark, frog, bear) default to Animals unless holiday or costume cues yank them to Halloween. Black Cat is the teaching example.
When two cues fight, use the trap table instead of a coin flip.
Keep this table open on a second screen. It is the entire reason a Sort Them Ducks sorting guide exists as its own URL instead of a footnote on categories.

| Duck / look | Put it on | Do not put it on |
|---|---|---|
| Bartender | Mafia | Jobs, Cowboys |
| Dancer (community) | TBA — players flag it as a confusing look; confirm on the shelf, do not guess Jobs | Random Jobs |
| Black Cat | Halloween | Animals |
| Chef | Jobs | Food |
| Sun / Moon / Earth | Space | Weather |
| Shark | Animals | Beach |
| Lady Quackington | Cowboys | Mafia |
| Lifeguard | Beach | Jobs |
| Tsunami | Beach if Weather refuses | Weather-only |
| Dragon fruit | Fruits | Fantasy / dragons |
Players expect Jobs. The game parked bartender with Al Capone on Mafia. Once you accept that, other “job words” (lifeguard) get the same skepticism. Dancer stays TBA until a shelf accepts it.
Superheroes and Music may span two furniture pieces. If the first Superheroes shelf is full or refuses, try its twin before you dump the duck. Details on categories.
A red flash is not a softlock. The next section is the retry protocol.
Red means wrong category. The duck stays with you. There is no durability, no wanted star, no timer.
A refused place is not the same as a bomb clip. If the duck physically left the map, leave this page for troubleshooting.
Misplacing 10 ducks is a Steam achievement (What the Duck?!). Community guides say you need actual wrong placements. A red flash that refuses the duck may not count — if it never pops, deliberately seat ten on the wrong furniture.
Once red flashes stop surprising you, speed is just vacuum + facing aisles.
Guessing is slow. Vacuuming a known theme is fast. That is the whole mid-game.
| Tool | How it helps sorting |
|---|---|
| Auto-Collect Matching | Fills the bag with the duck in your hand — only useful if you already know the shelf |
| Shelf Reveals | Points at accepting furniture when the trap table is not in your head |
| Highlight Matching | Finds copies in a mixed pile |
| Auto-Shelve | Throw at the known shelf; skip the place animation |
Hold a pirate, vacuum pirates, walk to Pirates, throw. Do not vacuum a mixed bag of “whatever was on the floor.” That is the beginner guide first-hour mistake all over again.
Timed runs still use this guide — they just skip pretty rows. See speedrun.
Hat says chef, prop says burger: Jobs vs Food. In this taxonomy the toque wins and the burger duck without a toque goes to Food. Hat says cowboy, outfit says mafia tux: Lady Quackington still seats on Cowboys; bartender tux + tray seats on Mafia. Write the exception down once; do not re-derive it every pile.
Memorize the trap eight. Buy Shelf Reveals when mixed late-game piles stop matching those eight. It is a lookup tool, not a replacement for hat-first reading.
| Situation | Memorize | Buy Reveals |
|---|---|---|
| Bartender / cat / chef / sun / shark | Yes — first hour | Optional |
| Dual Superheroes / Music | Know twins exist | Yes if a twin is across the shop |
| Unlabeled late unique | No | Yes — that is the point of the upgrade |
| Red flash on a known trap | Re-read the table | Do not spend a key if you already know Mafia |
If the duck is clipped behind a rack, Shelf Reveals will still point at a shelf you cannot reach. That is troubleshooting, not a new category.
Highlight Matching glows copies of the duck in your hand. Shelf Reveals points at furniture. Buy Highlight when the pile is mixed; buy Reveals when you already isolated a duck and still cannot name the aisle. They are not the same upgrade with two labels.
Mafia. Not Jobs, not Cowboys.
Halloween, not Animals.
Space. Sun and moon are not Weather.
Usually no — wrong category. Retry from the trap table. Physics bugs after bombs are a different page.
Not until a verified catalog exists. Search by cue, not by invented ID.
Cowboys. A fancy name does not make her Mafia; bartender is the Mafia teaching duck.
Beach. Lifeguard is a job word, but the float and shoreline props win.
No. It only fills the bag with copies of the duck you already identified. Wrong held duck means a bag of wrong ducks.
